Dimapur, Oct. 12: The Diphupar Naga Students’ Union (DNSU) celebrated its 24th biennial general conference with the theme “Exploring alternatives” on Oct. 12 at the local ground, Diphupar Village.
Dr. Neikiesalie Nicky Kire, Advisor, Rural Development, attended the program as special invitee. Kire unfurled the union flag after which he unveiled the 2nd edition of DNSU Biennial Journal. While stressing on the theme “exploring alternatives” during his speech, he focused on how everyone should have a sense of responsibility for protecting the environment.
“How many plants survive and grow,” he asked the gathering of mostly school children at the conference advising them to make a pledge to plant at least 10 saplings at home. “Let us make it our core priority to be more responsible towards to our environment,” he said.
He pointed out that the climatic condition has changed due to the lapses in taking care of the environment by humans.
Kire also highlighted about backdoor appointments in the state. Acknowledging the girls in the state for excelling academically compared to the boys, Kire urged and encouraged the male students to try and outshine the girls academically and work hard towards their future jobs instead of relying on backdoor appointments.
“I urge everyone to have dignity of labour and maintain it while still preserving ones identity as well,” Kire encouraged the gathering.
Aghali S Swu, assistant environment engineer, Nagaland pollution control board (NPCB) spoke about an awareness campaign that NPCB has undertaken called “Clean and Green: my environment, my responsibility.”
“Are we taking any steps to protect our environment? Are we taking any steps to keep our environment clean and green?,” Swu questioned the young audience.
She laid out the causes and precautions on global warming and other environmental issues. “I urge the students to preserve the environment and walk on to strive for best steps,” she said.
“It is high time we as inhabitants of this God gifted world take up equal responsibility in keeping our environment clean and green,” she maintained further adding that one should not put the responsibility to the state government of municipal councils, town councils, NGO’s etc.
“Only by conducting awareness campaign or conducting mass social work, our towns/cities won’t become clean, rather cleanliness is a habit which one has to adapt and follow every day,” she said.
Swu later laid out the causes and precautions on global warming and other environmental issues. She urged the students to preserve the environment and walk on to strive for best steps.
An interactive session was also held between students and Swu in regard to environmental responsibilities where the students showed their keen interests in putting forth different questions related to environmental concerns. A pledge and signature campaign was initiated by the delegation present.
The DNSU in its 39th year of existence, elected its new team of office bearers on October 10 for the tenure 2018-2020 headed by its President, Pitovi Achumi and General Secretary, Grizel A Ngullie among other executives.
