Dimapur, May 25 (EMN): MDLSA: Mokokchung District Legal Services Authority (MDLSA) conducted legal awareness and seminar programme at United Christian Fellowship, Mokokchung on May 25.
Speaking as resource person on NSLSA scheme on women and children and domestic violence, JMFC and Secretary MDLSA, Phuleto Yeptho informed that there are schemes for women and children such as NALSA (Victims of Trafficking and Commercial Sexual Exploitation) Scheme, 2015, NALSA (Legal Services to the Workers in the Unorganized Sector) Scheme, 2015, NALSA (Child Friendly Legal Services to Children and their Protection)Scheme, 2015NALSA (Legal Services to the Mentally Ill and Mentally Disabled Persons) Scheme, 2015.
He also highlighted that there are schemes such as NALSA (Effective Implementation of Poverty Alleviation Schemes) Schemes, 2015, NALSA (Protection and Enforcement of Tribal Rights) Scheme, 2015 and NALSA (Legal Services to the Victims of Drug Abuse and Eradication of Drug Menace) Scheme, 2015.

On Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005,the Secretary pointed out that women are often subjected to violence by their husbands and in-laws and other family members, which causes both mental and physical injury to them. He added that this harassment and violence compels these unfortunate women to commit suicide.
Speaking as resource person on role of Para Legal Volunteers, PLV MDLSA, Bendangsenla informed that Para-Legal Volunteers (PLVs) Scheme, 2009 was bought out with the aim of imparting legal training to volunteers selected from different walks of life so as to ensure legal aid reach all sections of people through the process of Para-Legal Volunteers Scheme, ultimately removing the barriers of access to justice.
She highlighted that PLVs are expected to act as intermediaries bridging the gap between the common people and the legal services institutions and also to reach out to people at their doorstep rather than people approaching such legal institutions.
WDLSA: Wokha District Legal Services Authority (WDLSA) conducted legal awareness programme for Muslim community at Mosque, Tsumang (A) on May 23.
Speaking on Consumer Protection Act, Panel Lawyer of WDLSA, Renbonthung Tsanglao said that the Consumer Protection Act, 1986 ensures consumer the protection from hazardous goods and services. He apprised that there are Central Consumer Protection Council, State Consumer Protection Council and District Consumer Protection Council which are the consumer dispute redressal machineries under the act.
Panel Lawyer of WDLSA, Meribemo Lotha apprised that Lok Adalat is one of the alternative dispute redressal mechanisms, where disputes or cases pending in the court of law or at pre-litigation stage are settled or compromised amicably. He said that Lok Adalats have been given statutory status under the Legal Services Authority Act, 1987 and under the Act the award (decision) made by Lok Adalats is deemed to be decree of a civil court and is final and binding on all parties and no appeal against such an award lies before any court of law.
OIn Rights of Accused, Panel Lawyer of WDLSA, Gracy Ezung said that under Section 12 of the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987, all persons in custody are entitled to legal aid. She explained the role of District Legal Services in deputing remand advocate, legal services clinics in jails etc.
