Dimapur, May 30 (EMN): The district administrations of Kiphire and Wokha continue with preparations to rid their respective district of single-use plastic.
The government's publicity agency, the department of Information and Public Relations (IPR), issued updates to the media on Thursday informing about the development.
During a meeting on May 29 at Kiphire the district's officials discussed the "plastic free awareness" campaign, the IPR stated. The IPR did not identify the officials by name in the report.
They are said to have appealed to the ward community leaders and church leaders to "give proper guidance and awareness to the public."
"Suggestions from ward leaders were put forward and the district administration advised all the 11 ward chairmen and the officers to make bamboo enclosure in their respective offices and wards for throwing away the wastes," the updates from the IPR stated.
It was informed that a fine would be imposed if members of the public discard waste and garbage in the open streets.
The IPR informed that the district administration was requested to direct meat dealers and fishmongers to stop using plastic.
The Kiphire officials informed the ward leaders that an inspection will be held on June 4 in all the wards. On June 5 during World Environment Day awards will be given to wards that maintain the bamboo enclosures "properly," the IPR added.
Wokha
Similarly in Wokha, the administrator of Wokha Town Council, Additional Deputy Commissioner Andrew C Imti, ordered restriction on a number of plastic and similar items with immediate effect.
The IPR listed all single use plastic bags of less than 50 microns, all single use plastics, Styrofoam or thermocol cutlery, cups and plates.
Further, packaged drinking water bottles of 200ml and 100ml shall also be banned with effect from July 1 in order to provide time for business establishments to dispose the existing stock, the IPR stated.
'Therefore, no business establishment may henceforth buy stock or distribute such items. The penalty for violating the above order shall be INR 2000 for the first offence and INR 5000 for subsequent offence,' the IPR informed.
