DIMAPUR — The District Health Society (DHS), Longleng, organised a two-day district level training on Navjaat Shishu Suraksha Karyakram (NSSK) on September 11 and 12 at the conference hall of the chief medical officer (CMO) in Longleng town with Dr. Sanuzolu Kezo, paediatrician at District Hospital Longleng, as the resource person.


An update from the CMO stated that the programme was aimed at strengthening the capacity of healthcare providers in neonatal resuscitation and essential newborn care to reduce neonatal mortality.


The session on day-1 included preparedness for birth, infection prevention, preparation of the delivery room, routine care for babies at birth, neonatal resuscitation algorithms, use of bag and mask and steps for positive pressure ventilation.

Practical demonstrations and discussions were also carried out on handling babies, who do not cry or breathe at birth.


On day-2, topics such as continuation of positive pressure ventilation (PPV), observational care with the mother, care after birth, monitoring breathing and temperature, breastfeeding, kangaroo mother care, immunisation and neonatal transport were covered. Sessions also focused on recognising signs of sickness, discharge planning and practical demonstrations on the use of radiant warmers and resuscitation equipment.


Besides, pre-test and post-test were conducted to assess the knowledge and skill enhancement of the participants. The training concluded with discussions and wrap-up sessions, ensuring that participants are better equipped to provide life-saving interventions for newborns.


Delivering the closing remarks, Dr. Imtijungshi Aier, DPO RCH/UIP, encouraged all the participants to make good use of the training in their respective health units for the benefit of newborn care in the district.


It further stated that the programme highlighted the collective commitment of the health department towards improving maternal and child health indicators in the district.
