Imphal, July 14 (EMN): Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on July 14 handed over cheques amounting to INR 5 lakh each to District Youth Affairs and sports officers of 16 districts of Manipur to start the functioning of the District Level Khelo India Centre.
Speaking on the occasion held at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat, Biren Singh stated that the Ministry of Sports, Government of India has taken up initiative to establish 1000 Khelo India Centres across the Country under the Khelo India programme.
He said archery, athletics, boxing, and badminton, cycling, fencing, and hockey, judo, rowing, and shooting, swimming, table tennis, and weightlifting, wrestling, football and traditional sports is now included as identified sports disciplines under the Khelo India Centre.
As such, Sports Authority of India (SAI), Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India has approved the opening of district level Khelo India Centre for different sports disciplines at 16 districts of Manipur.
He informed that a total amount of INR 1,12,00,000 (one crore twelve lakh) has been sanctioned on May 31 last year for 16 districts of Manipur for preparation and to upgrade the field.
He added that Khelo India State Centre of Excellence in 3 sports disciplines including archery, hockey and weightlifting at Khuman Lampak Sports Complex in Imphal would be started soon.
Biren Singh was also hopeful that attracting youths towards the field of games and sports would help them away from drugs related activities and consumption.
Appreciating all the students, teaching and non-teaching staff of government schools that recorded a high pass percentage of 60.40 percent in the recently declared class 10 examination 2022 result, he informed that headmasters and teachers of these schools will be rewarded on August 13 this year.
