DIMAPUR — Can
Youth, in partnership with the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority
(NSDMA), launched a Community First Responder Preparedness Programme at the
Rongmei Customary Court in Chungaizaeng Colony, Burma Camp, Dimapur, on Monday.
The programme aims to strengthen community resilience and
empower youth in disaster preparedness and response, stated a press release.
Dr. Tinojongshi Chang, deputy commissioner and chairman of
the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), was the special guest during
the event.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Chang highlighted the critical
need for preparedness against floods, fires, and earthquakes. He stressed the
importance of 24/7 readiness, regular mock drills, and collaboration with
expert trainers.
He also acknowledged infrastructure challenges, particularly
limited road access for emergency vehicles, and emphasised the need for
coordinated efforts to overcome these obstacles.
Delivering the keynote address, Zhove Lohe, secretary and
director of Can Youth, emphasised the crucial role of youth in disaster
response, citing the 2014 flood in Chungaizaeng as a stark reminder of the need
for community preparedness.
He stated that disasters are a collective responsibility,
highlighting the importance of equipping volunteers with the necessary skills.
Naro, representing the Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC),
commended the efforts of Can Youth trainers and encouraged the youth to
actively participate in such initiatives.
