Disability scheme beneficiaries decline in Nagaland

- DIMAPUR — According
to the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Department of Empowerment of
Persons with Disabilities (Divyangjan) annual report 2023-2024, the number of
beneficiaries under the Deendayal Divyangjan Rehabilitation Scheme (DDRS
Scheme) in Nagaland was 48, a decrease from 60 beneficiaries in 2022-2023.
- Nagaland received a total fund of INR 37.61 lakh under the
Deendayal Divyangjan Rehabilitation Scheme (DDRS) in 2023-2024, marking an
increase from INR 30.36 lakh in 2022-2023.
- As per the last census conducted in the country, the
population of persons with disabilities in Nagaland consists of 29,631
individuals. According to the 2011 Census, there are 2.68 crore persons with
disabilities in India, which constitute 2.21 per cent of the total population.
Of this total, approximately 1.50 crore are male and 1.18 crore are female.
- These include persons with visual, hearing, speech and
locomotor disabilities, mental illness, intellectual disabilities (formerly
referred to as mental retardation), multiple disabilities, and other disabilities.
- Under the Scheme for Implementation of the Rights of Persons
with Disabilities Act (SIPDA Scheme), a grant-in-aid of INR 95.65 lakh (part of
the second instalment) was released in 2023-24 to the Nagaland state government
for the Accessible India Campaign, aimed at creating a barrier-free environment
in eight state government buildings in Kohima.
- As per the annual report, the state has generated a total of
2,770 e-Unique Disability Identity (UDID) cards as of March 31, 2024.
