Dimapur, March 8
Students of Government High School (GHS) Diphupar today took to streets against non-availability of Maths teacher since September 2015.
Initiated by Diphupar Naga Students Union (DNSU), the peaceful demonstration against the Education department’s failure to take note of the students’ urgent need, started off from school premises around 9 a.m. and marched through the National Highway holding placards that read “No Maths No Solution”, “Bags of assurances but no solution”, “Don’t kill our future”, “We wear uniforms but taught nothing”. The procession concluded by 11 a.m. after the arrival of Deputy District Education Officer (DDEO) Dimapur R. Amongla Jamir.
Amongla, while assuring the students for early redressal, acknowledged that some schools have more teachers than required while others have shortage. Expressing embarrassment over the whole issue, DDEO stated that the department has failed its duty.
However, DNSU questioned as to why the Math teacher from GHS Diphupar was transferred during crucial hour of exams. They pointed out that bag full of assurances by the department has never been put to practice. “The assurance game should be stopped,” said DNSU President Sakulemba Jamir.
Handing out a copy from Directorate of School Education that contains the statement for the transfer of G/T (Maths) immediately from Government Higher Secondary School (GHSS) Dimapur to GHS Diphupar on temporary measures, DDEO communicated to the student community that the transfer was until such time the state govt. provides regular G/T (Maths) for GHS Diphupar and by March end the issue will be resolved for good.
Not convinced by the assurance for temporary placement and sensing uncertainty of the department, the DNSU conveyed that the agitation will be called off on temporary basis and if their demand for Maths teacher is not met at the earliest then the student body will resort to aggressive agitation.
Along with the DNSU, the peaceful agitation was supported with the presence of Diphupar Naga Women Organization (DNWO), Diphupar Naga Youth Organization (DNYO), Diphupar Village Council (DVC) and various other tribal units of Diphupar.
The Nagaland school education has many a time come under fire for their negligence towards students’ welfare and majority of the state-run-government schools are in a mess. It may be noted that a total of 104 Class X students appeared High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) Exams 2016 without edification in Math subject.
