Diphu, May 4 (EMN): Dhon Killing from Diphu town in Assam has bagged the bronze medal in the under-51 kg category, junior boys, in the recently concluded third India Open International Taekwondo Championship. The event was held from April 26 to the 28th at the Tyagraj indoor stadium in New Delhi.
The tournament was organised by the All India University Taekwondo Council and Delhi Taekwondo Association, and promoted by the Taekwondo Federation of India.
17-year old Killing is the son of Sarpo Killing and Bari Terangpi of Chandmari village, which is 2 km from ward-4 of Diphu town.
Talking to
Eastern Mirror at his residence, Dhon Killing said he played for five rounds out of which he was successful in four rounds. However in the fifth round he could not overcome his opponent from South Korea. He managed to defeat his opponent from Pune, Hyderabad, Nepal, and Sri Lanka in first and fourth round, in that order. He is thankful to the KSA-Inglongpho, GGKSA, and Pinki Narzary, his coach, and Binolin Phangchopi for their support to him.
11 countries including South Korea, Sri Lanka, and Nepal participated in the tournament. From India there were 50 competitors from 20 states, out of which 25 won medals in various categories.
Speaking about his training, Killing said to he started taking Taekwondo classes from when he was in class-VI. He took classes from Kamsing Hanse at the Taekwondo School of Karbi Anglong Taekwondo Association (Kata) in Diphu. There are 30 students at Kata.
‘Many parents are not aware of the martial arts form of Taekwondo in Karbi Anglong,’ Killing said. There is a ‘big scope and benefit' in the sports discipline, he added. He believes that Taekwondo can help in developing a person's mental and physical health.
Taekwondo classes in Diphu are being taught openly. Killing felt that there should be an indoor facility for coaching.
Killing, currently pursuing his second semester degree course from Diphu Government College, plans to take part in the All Assam Taekwondo Championship which is scheduled to be held in July in Nagaon.
Killing bagged two gold medals in 2016 at the All Assam Taekwondo Championship held at Golaghat and Nagoan in 2017. He won also two bronze medals from the national games held at Ludhiana in Punjab in 2017; and in Guwahati Nehru stadium in the same year.
