Diphu, Nov. 10 (EMN): A bakery in Diphu in neighbouring Assam which was accused of being responsible for serving contaminated food has now been embroiled in a case of assault. A person has been reported to have been assaulted by security personnel over issues that are understood to be indirectly related to the case of food poisoning.
The second incident, the case of assault, was reported to have happened on Nov. 9.
Irate social and students’ organisations in Karbi Anglong have demanded immediate cancellation of the trading license of an eatery called Roy Bakery in Diphu.
Until its license is cancelled by the area’s authority, Diphu market will remain shut, the organisations have declared. The shutdown began Nov. 10 afternoon, according to the Karbi Students’ Association’s (KSA) President Bijoy Bey during the press conference at Rongnihang Fri. evening.
According to Bey, another incident occurred at Roy bakery on Nov. 9: one Angtong Engti went to the bakery to ask whether or not it had an ‘order letter’ from the authorities. The bakery could not show the ‘order letter,’ it was claimed. During the conversation between the bakery and said person, it was alleged, police personal are said to have arrived and assaulted him in public. He was then taken reportedly to ‘Diphu town outpost,’ according to Bey.
A complaint has been lodged against Roy Bakery, he said. The authorities have not yet arrested the management of the bakery ‘after all FIR had been lodged,’ he was understood to have said.
Also, the president of the Karbi Students’ Union (KSU), George Timung demanded that the Diphu town outpost’s officer in-charge Chiraj Engti be suspended immediately. ‘It was a really condemnable act. We will not tolerate such kind of inhuman act,’ the leaders said.
The reported victim Angtong Engti, who was present at the press conference said: ‘I was badly beaten up by Chiraj Engti, SI Diphu town outpost...while I was in conversation with the bakery. I asked the bakery whether (it) had been given the ‘reopening letter.’ During that time, he said, Chiraj Engti came and ‘beat me in front of the public and even inside the town police outpost, insulted me with abusive language, even proclaiming himself as “Diphu town ‘Gunda’” ( Hindi for thug).
The press conference was called by the Karbi Anglong Social Development Organisation, Karbi Students’ Union, Karbi Farmers’ Association, Karbi Hills Development & Protection Organisations, Karbi Student’s Association, Greater Guwahati Karbi Students’ Association; Karbi Anglong Youth Organisation; and the United Karbi youth Development Committee.
