Dimapur, July 10 (EMN): A team of Dimapur Wildlife Division has made a trip to Akumen village in Mokokchung on July 9. The purpose of the trip was to conduct an awareness programme about the mitigation of Human Animal Conflict (HAC). A press release from the wildlife establishment on Tuesday informed that the trip was led by the Wildlife Warden Dimapur (WWD), K Caroline Angami.
According to the updates, the programme was initiated after a leopard attacked a local villager a few days ago in the vicinity of Akumen village. The updates mentioned that people from Lirmen and Tsurmen villages also participated in the programme.
Angami addressed the participants during the programme and distributed guidelines and manual books about Wildlife Protection Act 1972 to the participants.
The updates mentioned that Bano Haralu, the director of Nagaland Wildlife and Biodiversity Conservation Trust who possess a vast experience and knowledge in the field of Human Animal Conflict attended the programme as the resource person. Haralu exhorted the participants to have a holistic approach on mitigation of Wildlife conflict.
Speaking about the leopard incident Haralu opined that the incident should be studied on chronological events over the past and not on any random assumptions of wild animal.
Haralu asserted that humans and wild animals have co-existed in the past and it is still the same today. She stated that with the ever increasing demands of resources it only become more imperative to be proactive in conservation and have a sense of belongingness to the surrounding areas.
According to the updates, visual clips on wildlife crime and also videos on mutual co-existence of human with leopard were shown to the participants on projectors to give practical information to the viewers.
