Dimapur, September 17: An awareness programme on segregation of wastes from household was conducted for Dimapur colony GBs and councils by Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) on September 17 in its office premises.
Addressing media persons prior to the programme, Deputy Commissioner, Dimapur, Kesonyu Yhome, remarked that Dimapur is late in adopting the segregation at source strategy but with ‘waste management’ being a big concern for all, he said the new project will be a way out to address the waste issue. Seeking absolute co-operation from the public, Yhome articulated that unless public come forward the ‘segregation from household’ project will never succeed as the development depends wholly on the participation from Dimapur households. Maintaining the hospital waste to be a serious problem, he called on to streamline this issue. He also called upon the GBs and wards representative to sensitise their residents to co-operate for the constructive mission.
As per the Solid Waste Management Rule 2016, segregation at source mandates segregation of waste in order to separate produced waste at source (from household) to sustain the city into eco-friendly and healthy, elucidated DMC administrator, H Atokhe Aye.
Waste generators would now have to segregate waste into four streams- dry waste, wet waste, home healthcare waste and electronic waste. Dimapur will soon receive a treatment plant for waste management at the dumping site located at Burma Camp, informed Atokhe.
DMC has asked residents to understand the issues related to segregation of garbage and proper disposal and co-operate by adopting waste segregation process from its source.
