Dimapur set for major road overhaul under Urban Development initiatives

  • Ongoing construction work on the DC Court Junction-Clock Tower-Dhobinalla Junction-Tragopan Junction road stretch.

  • DIMAPUR — Dimapur district’s road network is finally set for a major overhaul after years of neglect and patchwork repairs.

  • With responsibilities split among three government entities—the National Highways division under the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), the state Public Works Department (PWD), and the Urban Development department—the long-overdue improvement of city roads is gaining momentum.

  • The Urban Development department is now taking the lead in upgrading some of Dimapur’s most heavily used urban roads, many of which had only seen minor repairs over the years. Among the major ongoing projects is the DC Court Junction-Clock Tower-Dhobinalla Junction-Tragopan Junction road stretch.

  • According to the department, several more road projects are also set to commence in the coming months, including: improvement of the road from Public College of Commerce to traffic point near the Police Commissioner’s office; improvement of the road from Nagarjan traffic point to Railway Station to Burma Camp & Powerhouse area; improvement of the road from Nuton Bosti Junction to Khermahal Junction; and improvement of the road from Old Khatkati Road to Burma Camp to the DMC Dumping Site via Sunrise Colony, North Block, Burma Camp.

  • Currently, the Urban Development department manages 201.5 km of road network in Dimapur, with 162.5 km under Dimapur Municipality and 39.1 km in East Dimapur.

  • Previously, the Executive Engineer-II of the Urban Engineering Wing, Theruovituo Pieny, had explained to Eastern Mirror that limited funds have long been a major hurdle: “Workflow perfection cannot be achieved because of limited funds.” Since taking over responsibilities in 2020, the department has struggled to meet the growing infrastructure demands of the city.

  • Zungatemba Jamir, Junior Engineer with the Urban Engineering Wing and currently overseeing construction at Tajen Ao Road, informed Eastern Mirror that the ongoing works are expected to be completed within a couple of months. He added that remaining projects are also scheduled to begin soon.

  • Tajen Ao Road, often cited as one of the most dilapidated in the city, had been temporarily repaired a few months ago due to lack of funds for full-scale construction—despite knowing it would deteriorate quickly during the rainy season.

  • The current reconstruction offers a long-awaited relief for residents, with department officials admitting that patchwork repairs were no longer a viable solution.

  • In addition to Tajen Ao Road, the Urban Development department is now actively overseeing roadworks across several key areas, including: Clock Tower to Tragopan Junction, Nagarjan Road, Supermarket Road, Walford, Burma Camp, roads near the Old Naga Cemetery, and colony roads in Oriental Colony, PWD Colony, Lake View Colony.

  • The current initiatives mark a major step forward in improving public infrastructure and easing transportation woes for thousands of commuters in Dimapur.

  • However, some challenges remain. The department currently owns no construction machinery and is facing a shortage of workforce, relying on funding from both state and central governments for all construction and maintenance activities.
