The Dimapur police have arrested two underground workers on separate charges of extortion, and for possession of illegal firearms. The Dimapur police authorities issued a press release on Tuesday informing of the arrest.
One person identified as Atoka Achumi reportedly a “sgt major” of the NSCN(R) was arrested from the Blue Hill area in Dimapur town while he was extorting money in the area, the police said.
“One .32 pistol with 5 live rounds was seized from his possession. He was arrested on 15.01.16 by the patrol section of B/11 NAP (IR),” the police said.
In another case, police arrested anbother underground member of “GPRN/NSCN” for illegal possession of arms. On January 18, the patrol section of the C/13 NAP (IR) arrested one person from Rail Bazaar, identified later as one Temsuliba Jamir, reportedly a “major” of GPRN/NSCN. He was arrested on charges of illegal possession of a .22 pistol with one live round, the police said.
Drugs & vehicle theft
In other cases, the police have made arrests in connection with drugs smuggling and vehicle lifting. The press release said that on the 23rd,one person identified as a Babul Ali from Morigaon district of Assam was arrested from the Dimapur Railway Station for possession of 65 tablets of Ativan, a banned sedative.
“On enquiry it was ascertained that the sedatives were used to lace the drinks and eatables of the passengers in the trains and thereafter, loot them while sedated. Investigation on the matter is under progress,” the police said.
Also, on the 21st, the police said to have found a Toyota Innova which was reportedly hijacked from Assam on the 17th. “The vehicle was found plying within the town area and fled on being chased by the police. The vehicle was recovered after it was found abandoned in the nearby vicinity. The same has been handed over to the Dibrugarh police under whose jurisdiction a case has been registered,” the police stated in the press release.
Likewise, the police said to have seized on January 23 a Toyota Etios bearing an Assam registration. The police arrested its owner, one Monaranjan Kalita along with two others identified as Karan Das and Netash Majumdar.
“They are all residents of Dibrugarh, Assam and were arrested in the process of discreetly disposing off the vehicle. The vehicle which was brought under bank finance with first party insurance was meant to be sold off illegally by the owner in connivance with the other two arrested person and later, a false lost report was to be lodged with the police,” the police said.
In another case, this one the 24th, a person identified as Jalaluddin of Thoubal district in Manipur was arrested while he was caught trying to steal a motorcycle. “He was found in possession of 28 sets of different motorcycle keys and is suspected to be a professional vehicle lifter. Investigation on the case is under progress,” the police said.
