Dimapur, July 6 (EMN): The Peace Channel team of Dimapur conducted a summer camp at the DBIDL Hall in Don Bosco campus, in Dimapur on July 2 and 3rd. A press release from Peace Channel on Thursday informed that the camp was organised in collaboration with NEI- Action Desk-NCCI and DAN.
According to the update, the programme was conducted on the theme, “Transformed by Peace to transform the World.” It was conducted with objectives to make the peace club members understand the concept of peace, conflict, peacebuilding, peace education, and youth as peace builders in the society.
A peace activist, Garrol Lotha spoke about peer mediation stating that it was a process of intervening in a conflict situation by students to resolve student issues as a third neutral party. Lotha stressed on the need of peer mediation in the school settings which she said would help the students to resolve issues among themselves. She mentioned the qualities and skills needed to be a good mediator which includes good communication skills, respect for the peers, confidentiality, empathy, leadership potentials, and willingness to receive feedbacks.
On the same note, peace activist Patrick Tungoe also stated that peer mediation is a process in which students solve the problems that may occur in institutes. He said students can play the role of mediator in situations like misunderstanding between students, teasing or name-calling, relationship arguments, accusations, and destruction of property among others. Tungoe urged the students to follow the four basic principles to be a mediator: self-determination, confidentiality, voluntary consent, and neutrality.
Speaking on leadership, Liangamang Robert said that leadership is the ability to translate unlimited potentials into desired results in which one has to become a leader to him first. “Leadership is very common but it is important how one performs it. The characteristics of leadership are not position, title and personal attributes rather leadership means being calm, confident, courageous and consistent,” stated Robert.
Kishor Das highlighted the importance of human rights and stated that it was an integral part of human life that distinguishes human beings from other living beings. He mentioned some of the rights which are essential for dignified human existence—food, clothing, shelter, and medical care. He further mentioned that right to education, right to freedom of culture, right to freedom of speech and expression, and right to free movement are essential for the development of human personality.
Kishor urged the participants to respect everyone irrespective of caste, colour, gender, tribe or background and also encouraged them to promote peace and human rights as peace club member and set an example for others.
The press note mentioned that 120 students along with eight teachers from different institutions participated during the programme. The students were edified on emotional handling skills, leadership skills, peer mediation, inner peace, human rights, and peace through music.
