
Dimapur, Oct. 21 (EMN): Dimapur district observed Global Iodine Deficiency Disorder Prevention Day on October 21 by highlighting the importance of iodine for the normal growth, development and functioning of both the brain and the body.
Speaking during the programme, the resource person and deputy chief medical officer, Dr. Antoly Suu, sensitised on the importance of iodine. According to her, an adult requires only 150 micrograms of iodine. She stated that iodine is essential for normal growth, development and functioning of both the brain and the body, a DIPR report stated.
More importantly, Suu stated that a newborn’s brain and body could become permanently retarded and stunted without enough iodine. She stated that iodine is added to salt since everyone uses salt in their daily diet irrespective of religion, caste or economic status. She has also sensitised on the correct way to store iodised salt at home.
She further stated that sale of non-iodised salt for human consumption is a punishable offence under the law. She, therefore, urged the traders to label non-iodised salt only for animals and “Not for human consumption”.
Also speaking on the occasion, the CMO Dimapur Dr. Mereninla Senlem urged the participants to consume only iodised salt and to spread the information to their families, friends and neighbours.
The report also stated that participants have pledged to consume only iodised salt.
It added that the Global IDD Day was observed in all health units and villages. It stated that Ashas have demonstrated a practical test to find out the content of iodine in salt.
The report further stated that the Global Iodine Deficiency Disorder Prevention Day would be observed for a week in the district to sensitise traders and store keepers on the importance of iodised salt.
