DIMAPUR — Along with rest of the world, District Level Committee for Person with Disabilities, Dimapur, in collaboration with Exodus Disabled People’s Organisation, Dimapur, celebrated International Day of Persons with Disabilities at the Chapel Hall of DImapur District Hospital on Saturday on the theme “United in action to rescue and achieve the SDGs for, with and by persons with disabilities.”
Speaking on the occasion as the special guest, the deputy commissioner of Dimapur, Dr. Tinojonshi Chang, said everyone is equal as God has bestowed different talent to each and everyone. While describing the event as a symbol of solidarity and care for individuals with disabilities, he, however, expressed concern about the lack of awareness in numerous villages, where instead of receiving love and support, those individuals encounter discrimination. He, therefore, stated that it should be the collective responsibility of everyone to propagate the message of acceptance and understanding.
Dr. Chang mentioned that various initiatives have been undertaken by the government to ensure the welfare of individuals with disabilities with an aim to provide equal opportunities. He informed that the District Level Committee for Persons with Disabilities, Dimapur, would be organising some events tailored for them in the upcoming days.
He also stated that the Election Commission of India (ECI) is actively working on enrolling individuals with disabilities who were above 18 years in the ongoing special summary revision with an aim to provide every eligible individual the opportunity to exercise their adult franchise.
Short speeches were delivered by director of Employment National Career Service Centre for Differently Abled, Dr. T Mohan; student of Deaf Biblical Ministry; assistant district programme manager of NSRLM, Dimapur, Yimok Phom; president of Exodus DPO, Rongsen Jamir; and director of Prodigals’ Home, K Ela.
The welcome address and keynote address was delivered by the chief medical officer (CMO) of Dimapur, Dr. Limatula Aier, while an invocation prayer was said by the chaplain of District Hospital Dimapur, Yhunlo Thong.
