Dimapur, the commercial hub of Nagaland, is witnessing a commendable sanitation effort from the Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC). These initiatives reflect a serious commitment towards making Dimapur a cleaner, healthier, and more pleasant place to live in. The DMC’s relentless efforts in collecting garbage, cleaning drains, and managing waste are laudable considering the importance of sanitation in urban areas.
However, maintaining cleanliness cannot be the responsibility of the authorities alone. Every resident shares equal moral and civic responsibility to ensure that garbage is not carelessly littered in drains, roadsides, or public spaces. Proper disposal of waste not only helps the efforts of the DMC but also prevents clogging of drains, thereby averting flooding and reducing health risks.
That being said, dust and waste continue to accumulate along road dividers, flyovers, and roadsides despite sanitation drives. These unattended areas contribute to filthy and unhygienic environment, defeating the very purpose of sanitation initiatives. It not only mars the image the city but also poses health hazards, particularly during the dry season when dust becomes airborne.
While acknowledging the efforts of the DMC, the concerned authorities should take more proactive steps to ensure regular cleaning of dust and debris on roadsides and public spaces.
At the same time, every citizen, colony, and community organisation in Dimapur should take ownership of their surroundings. Awareness drives, community clean-up campaigns, and responsible waste disposal habits must go hand-in-hand with the municipality’s actions.
Cleanliness reflects the character of a city and its people. If Dimapur aspires to be recognised as a progressive and respectable town, every individual must contribute towards keeping their surroundings clean — not just during special drives, but as a habit. Let us work hand-in-hand with the Dimapur Municipal Council to build a cleaner, greener, and more beautiful Dimapur for the generations to come.
