DIMAPUR — In its continued efforts to prepare
Dimapur for the approaching monsoon season, the Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC)
on Wednesday undertook drain-clearing works at Circular Road near Popular
Bakery.
The initiative is part of an ongoing citywide sanitation
drive aimed at unclogging drains across more than 100 colonies.
Achum Jami, convenor of the DMC’s Sanitation Branch,
informed that the drain-cleaning drive began in January and will continue based
on urgency and colony-specific needs.
He acknowledged the enormity of the task and urged the
public to cooperate with the DMC in keeping the city clean and reducing flood
risks during the monsoon.
Recognising the critical role of community involvement, Jami
made an appeal to churches in Nagaland, suggesting that they initiate or
support cleanliness drives or educate congregations on sanitation two to three
times a year.

“In Nagaland, 99% of the population are church-going
Christians. If the Church can promote cleanliness even once or twice a year,
that message will start from our homes and extend into the community. This way,
we can build a cleaner Dimapur,” Jami said.
He expressed concern that despite the DMC’s continuous
efforts, public negligence remains a challenge, especially during the rainy
season when garbage dumped in drains often causes blockages and waterlogging.
Jami appealed to citizens not to rely solely on the DMC for
maintaining cleanliness, urging them to dispose of waste at designated
collection points or hand it over to the DMC garbage trucks that operate in
their localities.
In an earlier interaction with this newspaper in April, Jami
had informed that each DMC councillor has been assigned the responsibility of
conducting awareness campaigns in their respective wards before June to ensure
the city is prepared for the monsoon.
