DIMAPUR — Following the death of 32-year-old man, Mhathung Lotha, who succumbed to injuries after being assaulted, the Dimapur Lotha Students’ Union (DLSU) met with the investigating officers on Thursday and urged them to expedite the case and deliver justice to the victim.

Speaking to media persons after the meeting, DLSU president Chumren Humtsoe said the police had assured the union that the case would be treated with utmost priority and resolved at the earliest. “We believe the police will do their work,” he added.

It may be mentioned that the Commissioner of Police, Dimapur, had informed that personnel from the East Police Station had arrested six individuals in connection with the case, and a regular case has been registered for further investigation.

Humtsoe said that until justice is served, the DLSU would continue to pursue the issue and “will not remain silent.”

He also appealed to the public not to spread communal hate over the incident and urged Nagas to remain united and condemn such acts. “Those at fault should be punished according to the law,” he said.

Meanwhile, the union informed that the condition of the victim’s friend, who was also assaulted, is stable and recovering under medical care.

Calling the incident “a grave disgrace to humanity and the values we uphold as Nagas,” the DLSU condemned the imposition of a fine on the deceased and his friend, terming it unjust.

DM Lotha, chairman of ‘Wise Nagaland Society’, also expressed grief over the tragic and untimely death. He said that the incident could have been “controlled and amicably resolved” if the parties had contacted the police or village council instead of taking matters into their own hands.

He further stressed that no individual has the right to impose fines, stating that only a court or a legally recognised body can do so.
