Institutions in Dimapur and Kiphire observe Fire Service Week with mock drills, demonstrations, and awareness competitions.

DIMAPUR — Educational institutions in Dimapur and Kiphire observed the 'Fire Service Week 2026' from April 14 to the 20th on the theme 'Safe school, safe hospital and fire safety aware society – Together for fire prevention'.
Dimapur: The Internal Quality Assurance Cell, in collaboration with the Fire Station, Central Dimapur, organised a mock drill at the North East Christian University (NECU) campus on Monday.
According to an update, as part of the observation, competitions were organised wherein Wadechaba Aier, Likhuvu Zhimo, and Khelileng won the first, second, and third prizes, respectively, in the poster-making competition.
Lovito A Shohe, Peshie H, and Luolavor Louis won the first, second, and third prizes, respectively, in the essay competition.
The winners were felicitated with cash prizes and certificates sponsored by the Directorate of Fire and Emergency Services, Nagaland.
During the mock drill, personnel from the Fire Station, Central Dimapur, spoke on the importance of awareness about fire safety, stating that it is not only an individual but also a collective responsibility.
Explaining the types of fire hazards, they detailed the four types of fires: Class A (fires involving solid materials), Class B (fires involving flammable liquid), Class C (fires involving gas), and Class D (fires involving metals). They also demonstrated how different fire extinguishers such as water, foam, dry powder, and carbon dioxide can be used to tackle such fires.
With regard to fire hazards due to gas cylinder leakage, practical demonstrations were shown by the team. They explained the importance of changing regulators and gas pipes before five years and two years, respectively, to help prevent fire hazards. Awareness was also shared regarding printings on the cylinders which indicate their expiry month.
Students from the university were also given practical training on how to use fire extinguishers and douse fires due to gas cylinder leakages. The mock drill was attended by both the faculty and staff of the university.
Kiphire: Meanwhile, the week-long programme at Agape Higher Secondary School in Kiphire featured fire safety drills and demonstrations, along with an essay competition.
An update mentioned that the annual event honours the brave firefighters who laid down their lives in the line of duty. It holds historical significance as it commemorates the anniversary of the tragic Bombay Dock Explosion of 1944, one of India’s most devastating fire disasters, where numerous fire personnel perished while battling massive fires and explosions.
Sports events were also organised across all units, aligning with the Fit India Movement.
The week concluded with the announcement of the essay competition winners. Suli T Sangtam took first place, followed by Ivy C Sure in second and Suzila L Sangtam in third.
A total of 19 students from classes 10 and 12 of Agape Higher Secondary School participated in the competition.
