DIMAPUR, JANUARY 14
The Dimapur traffic police in collaboration with the transport department organized a friendly awareness drive as part of the ‘Road Safety Week’ which is being campaigned throughout the country from January 11.
Dimapur district is divided into two zones- From Purana Bazar towards town area falling under Zone-I and beyond Purana Bazar as Zone- II. The awareness drive was organized at Purana Pazar traffic point and Plaza traffic point respectively.
The Zone- II drive which started off at around 10 a.m. continued for more than an hour with police personnel distributing sweets and pamphlets to the commuters.
The Zone- II under the leadership of ACP (T) Zone 1, Seyiesezo Peseyie organized the drive at around 12 noon where sweets and pamphlets were also distributed to commuters, who were waiting for green signal so as to avoid traffic commotion during the busy hours.
‘My Traffic Pledge’ pamphlets distributed to the commuters included some road safety tips like ‘I will not drink and drive’, I will obey traffic rules’, I will strictly follow lane discipline, I will always wear my helmet/seat belt, etc under the aegis of ‘Traffic Police Dimapur’.
Seyiesezo Peseyie who led the team during the awareness drive also provided a comparative report of the past five years ‘accidental data’ that includes number of accidents, injuries and fatal.
The comparative report shows that the number of accidents occurred in the district has come down to 534 in 2015 while 2014 recorded the maximum number of cases with 635 accidents.
Though the number of accidents seemed to have come down over the years, 2015 witnessed the most number of injuries with 355 cases.
Meanwhile, since the inception of the Commissionerate system in the state from May 2015 with more man power pushed into the department, the traffic controlling system is witnessing positive changes with better and strict traffic rules and parking systems.
The women traffic police who started controlling the traffic signals since few months back also seem to have found its comfort in the profession. The ACP who was also actively involved during the Road Safety Week awareness drive at the Plaza traffic point junction said that the department since few months back has been organizing such drives.
The Dimapur police also planned to organize more safety drives in the coming days along with the transport department and the scouts and guides of the district.
