Dimapur Gorkha Union condemns Mokokchung rape

DIMAPUR — The Dimapur Gorkha Union (DGU) has unequivocally condemned the reported rape of a young Gorkha woman in Mokokchung on September 30 and stated that such brutal and inhuman act has wounded the conscience of entire society.

While taking cognisance of the pain inflicted by the incident, it made clear that the victim must never be blamed or stigmatised saying the onus is on the perpetrators and not on the survivor.

DGU expressed solidarity with the victim and her family and called for their safety, care and privacy to be protected at all times.

It has demanded the competent authorities to carry out a swift, transparent and thorough investigation and ensure that those responsible are prosecuted under the full rigour of the law. It also urged the administration to provide the victim and family with medical, legal and psychosocial support, while it also called upon the community to respond with compassion rather than condemnation.

DGU further reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the rights and dignity of women, to preserving the honour of all communities and to working with civil society and law enforcement to prevent such crimes in the future.
