Dimapur, Dec. 12: The business district of Nagaland, Dimapur, is not only the ‘dirtiest’ among the lot, it is also the most corrupt city in India thanks to the innumerable extortion activities that thrive in the city, a legislator has said.
Legislator Moatoshi Longkumer was speaking during a programme in Dimapur. Grants to self-help groups (SHG) financed by the Local Area Development Programme Fund (LADPF) 2018-19 for Dimapur II assembly constituency were disbursed on Wed. Dec. 12. The grants were disbursed by Longkumer, at the SM college auditorium, at PWD colony in Dimapur.
Altogether 225 SHG from Dimapur II constituency were given INR 20,000 from the LADPF.
In his address, Longkumer tagged Dimapur the 'dirtiest and most corrupted city in India' along with the weight of 'taxation after taxation'. In this regard, he asserted ‘We are responsible for the failure as everyone has turned blind eye to taxation’ and that it was time to call a spade a spade.
Naga women are facing difficulties in earn livelihood and should learn business rural economy, Longkumer said.
"Money maybe small but we should learn the art to use it judiciously and turn around the economy and contribute towards the building Dimapur city," Longkumer said. He pointed out that outsiders will not build Dimapur; it is ‘our responsibility to keep the city clean.’
The legislator was appreciative of the state government's initiative to impose ban on plastic. He suggested formation of group to impose ban on plastic in each colony in Dimapur city. He assured commitment to take up a plantation drive in 2019.
‘Dimapur is the gateway to Nagaland and if we change Dimapur for better automatically the whole state will follow suit,’ Longkumer explained. He also referred to the ‘tendency of begging’ in the Naga society. The legislator called for a stop to ‘the trend of begging.’ He pointed out that although ‘we may not be begging on the roadside, we tend to beg from door to door.’
