Dimapur, Jan. 19: With the municipal and town elections nearing, the Dimapur district’s Model Code of Conduct (MCC) committee have begun working. The deputy commissioner of Dimapur, Kesonyu Yhome, presided a meeting of the MCC Committee for Dimapur district on January 18 in Dimapur.
During the meeting, Yhome stated that the main purpose of the MCC committee was to oversee whether the Code of Conduct was being followed by the political parties. This is to ensure smooth, free and fair elections, he said.
The administrator also expressed gratefulness to the GBs, representatives of political parties and MCC committee members for extending their cooperation thus far.
“The real challenge will start now and you have to stick to the MCC,” he said.
Referring to the discussions of the state MCC committee, Yhome urged the representatives of political parties to convey the message to intending candidates highlighting ‘no feasting should take place and no youth camps can be set up except for the party office’ and that ‘no government vehicles are allowed to be used for campaigning purposes.’ They are also not to indulge in corrupt practices including bribery, or give undue influence, systematic appeal by the candidate or agents to vote or not to cast votes.
Further, information is to be given to the district administration prior to processions in the streets and meetings in public places where such situations may affect normal public movement and traffic. He further reminded that campaigns have to stop 48 hours before the scheduled time for election.
In the meeting, additional deputy commissioner of Dimapur, Elizabeth Ngully, also the RO of Dimapur, informed about the submission of list of bogus / absentees / deceased voters’ names at the earliest so that they can be marked in the electoral roll.
Also, Ngully also informed that the voters list will be distributed on the 23rd of January. She informed polling agents to attend a training program on January 20 to be held at the Dimapur Government College ‘in order to familiarise themselves and avoid confusions on the polling day.’
