DIMAPUR — Buoyed
by the victory in last Lok Sabha elections and eyeing for similar success in
the upcoming 2028 state general elections, the Dimapur District Congress
Committee (DCC) on Saturday launched its membership drive at Congress Bhavan.
Speaking on the occasion as chief guest, the NPCC working
president, C Apok Jamir, has termed the membership drive as ‘momentous,
symbolical and at the same time a needed programme for the Indian National
Congress at large.’
He stated that today they are confronted with lot of forces,
which are going against the Indian constitution by propagating policies and
programmes in conflict with the interest of the people of India. As far as
secularism is concerned, he stated that their very existence has been
threatened by some of the policies which they have been propagating actively
for almost 14 years.
He mentioned that the very purpose of organising the
enrollment drive was not about numbers of memberships registered but it a
movement, which basically is trying to break the conscious of citizens to rise
up to the challenges that are confronting today.
“Dimapur, a cosmopolitan city, represents all Naga tribes,
diverse communities, and religions and to ensure unity and progress, citizens
must stand against any government actions that violate constitutional
principles,” Jamir said.
He alleged that the BJP government, led by Modi and Amit
Shah, has been accused of consolidating power and making unilateral decisions
without adequate consultation with other stakeholders.
“This is evident in Manipur, where ethnic clashes have
persisted for nearly two years. Despite the ongoing strife, the government has
remained largely silent and failed to take proactive measures to resolve the
crisis,” he maintained.
He added that every citizen must stand against oppression
and atrocities saying that collective resistance ‘carries weight and drives
change.’ He added that the Indian National Congress stands as the strongest
barrier and vanguard in protecting the Constitution and people's interests.
While acknowledging that Hinduism promotes love and peace,
he however claimed that a section of people is spreading division and hatred.
He has called for unity to prevent such intolerance in Nagaland and across the
country.
On issues of development, Jamir mentioned that there is lack
of transparency in Nagaland’s administration.
When asked about the Dimapur land encroachment issues at the
railway station, he suggested that all stakeholders should prioritise public
interest in resolving such matters.
He also mentioned that the membership drive, which began in
Dimapur, would extend to other districts. Even though the Congress party does
not have elected representatives in the state assembly, he assured that the
party would remain active and vigilant.
The president of Dimapur DCC, Kutoho Chishi, urged the
citizens to join Congress to protect democracy and promote corruption-free
governance, emphasising that the initiative was a call to action for public
welfare, not just politics.
At the programme, short speech was also delivered by the
chairman of NPCC minority department, Javed Sarwar, while the welcome address
was delivered by Dimapur DCC general secretary, Kumjimong.
