Dimapur, March 22
Council members of various colonies have today questioned the authorities as to how it has issued pattas over drainages in some areas.
The council members of Westyard, Railway Bazaar area, Manipuri Basti, Chatteswari and Grace Colony in Dimapur said the government has issued pattas over drainage obstructing the smooth flow of sewage resulting in artificial floods in their areas.
While clearing clogged drainage at Railway Bazaar area on Sunday, the leaders of the colonies urged the district administration to cancel all such illegal pattas and demolish various structures built over drains. The council members also rued the apathy of Railway authorities for lending a deaf ear to the appeals made by the colonies to clear clogged drainage running underneath railway tracks for many years. Letters written to the railway authorities in this regard remain futile, said the colony leaders.
It may be mentioned here that a drainage of more than 100 feet long runs underneath the railway track.
The leaders, meanwhile, have cautioned that they might have to resort to blocking railway track if the authorities continue to remain unresponsive to the appeals made by the residents to clear the drainage underneath railway tracks.
More than 5000 families are affected by flood during rainy season owing to clogged drainage, said the colony leaders.
Meanwhile, they have appreciated the works undertaken by the DMC led by its administrator, H. Atokhe Aye for maintaining the town for the welfare of the people. Some of the leaders spoke about the demand of the public that such able leader should remain in DMC for longer period and carry out works to benefit the citizens.
It may be reminded that the Sunday’s cleaning of drainage at Railway Bazaar is part of DMC’s 2nd phase of developmental project.
