DIPHU — The two-day second edition of digital
conference (DIGICON) initiated by the Karbi Anglong Digital News Forum (KADNF)
got under way at Sarsing Teron (Langkung Habe) Memorial Town Hall on Monday.
Held on the theme ‘Welcome to the age of digital media,’
journalists associated with various digital news platforms and media houses
from both Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong are taking part in the
conference.
The conference started with the hoisting of the KADNF flag
by the president Ratish Rongphar, which was followed by the inaugural session.
Senior journalists and an official of the District Information and Public
Relations (DIPR), Kangbura Senar inaugurated the conference as the chief guest.
In his speech Senar emphasised the importance of digital
media in modern day life. He said with the popularity of social media,
information can be delivered at a very fast pace.
Presently, every person is relying on social media for
getting any information and digital platforms are connecting people globally,
he said.
Senar also spoke about the dos and don’ts of journalists on
their job.
A workshop was also organised to discuss the growth of the
digital era and the ethics of journalism.
In the first session, Nathan Ronghang, chairman of Karbi
Anglong Today, a digital news platform, spoke on the topic ‘Digital news media
is the media of the present and future.’
Ronghang said that social media has become the centre in
human society and people rely on social media for acquiring fast information
about any event and happenings.
While explaining about the potentiality of social media
Ronghang also mentioned about the negative aspects of social media if not
handled properly.
In the post-lunch session, independent journalist Roselyn
Taropi, the first among the Karbis to graduate in Mass Communication and
Journalism, spoke on the topic ‘Media ethics and regulations.’
Taropi said that a reporter should have the correct
information of names of persons, places and data.As journalists, they should uphold media
ethics and be honest in their duty, she said.
The last session of the day was taken up by Ibon Teron,
deputy secretary, Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), inc harge of
Taxation, on the topic ‘Overview of Karbi Anglong’s economy : current trends,
opportunities and challenges.’
Teron said that Karbi Anglong has sufficient land, but the
people do not know how to monetise their land. Stating that about 90 percent of
the people are engaged in agriculture activities, he stressed the need to adopt
modern machinery in agricultural practices. The district needs to have more
skilled persons to engage themselves in various technical activities, he added.
