Dimapur, March 16 (EMN): Director General of Assam Rifles, Lieutenant General Shokin Chauhan, visited Nagaland on March 16 and 17 to review the security situation in the state. Besides, he also inaugurated a cardamom processing plant in Mon.
The Director General also called on the governor PB Acharya in which the latter complimented the DG Assam Rifles for the stupendous work done by the Assam Rifles during his tenure especially during the recently concluded state assembly elections in the state of Nagaland, Tripura and Meghalaya.
During his visit to HQ IGAR (N), the DG Assam Rifles addressed all ranks and appreciated their hard work, dedication and professionalism. He further exhorted them to continue the good work and live up to the motto “Friends of the North East People.”
The Director General Assam Rifles also inaugurated a cardamom processing plant worth INR 40 lacs in Mon, which has been constructed and dedicated to the local populace by the Assam Rifles.
Since Mon district is the largest producer of cardamom in Nagaland, inception of the plant would boost to the farmers and trading of cardamom in the Eastern Nagaland. The processing plant would not only benefit 133 villages of Mon district but people from villages of neighbouring districts of Longleng and Tuensang.
The plant has the capacity to process 2000 kgs of cardamom in a cycle of 20 hours. The process would not only prevent wastage, which is inherent to the traditional processing, but also give an opportunity to the farmers to cut down on the prevalence of middle men thereby providing proper value to the actual farmers.
The processing plant would be run through a cooperative society formed by Mon village council on no profit basis, which would be available to any desirous person irrespective of tribe, clan, social, ethnic and geographical background at the cost specified by the society so as to generate funds for its operations and maintenance.
The Director General Assam Rifles conveyed his best wishes to the people of Nagaland for a bright, amiable and prosperous future and appealed them to closely associate and trust the Assam Rifles as true friends of the North East people.
