DIMAPUR — In response to the growing challenges of traffic congestion and unregulated parking in Wokha town, the Office of the Deputy Commissioner has issued a fresh directive aimed at improving urban mobility, ensuring public safety, and enhancing disaster preparedness.
The order, issued in continuation of an earlier notification, highlights the urgent need for a regulated parking system in light of the rapid increase in the number of vehicles and the limited availability of public space, stated a DIPR report.
Deputy Commissioner of Wokha, Vineet Kumar, observed that several commercial structures have emerged in recent years without adequate parking provisions for customers and staff. As a result, public spaces are increasingly being misused for indiscriminate parking, leading to severe traffic congestion, restricted pedestrian movement, and obstruction of emergency access routes.

To address these concerns, the district administration has called for immediate action. All private and commercial vehicle owners currently using public spaces for parking have been directed to make alternative arrangements within 45 days, with the deadline set for January 31, 2026.
The administration has also advised prospective vehicle buyers to consider parking availability before making purchases. Furthermore, shopping complexes, commercial establishments, and all new constructions are now required to incorporate adequate parking facilities within their premises.
The town council has been instructed to review and streamline the approval process for new commercial structures in accordance with the Municipal Act to ensure compliance with this requirement.
From February 1, 2026 onwards, parking along the National Highway passing through Wokha town will be strictly monitored. A task force comprising representatives from the administration, police, Traffic department, town council, and Transport office will be constituted to enforce this regulation.
In addition, the town council, in coordination with the traffic police, will undertake a comprehensive review of parking arrangements across all town roads. Necessary steps will be taken to regulate and identify suitable parking zones, ensuring that emergency vehicles can move without obstruction at all times.
