The department stated that this is a serious offence and shall invite a penalty in the form of a fine or imprisonment or both as per the Indian Electricity Act, 2003. It requested all to desist from such activities.
In case of any discrepancies and any other grievances in the bill, consumers have been requested to visit the office of their respective SDO for clarification, correction, and rectification.
All electricity consumers, including prepaid metered consumers, were advised to utilise the department's portal (dopn.gov.in) to make bill payments or recharge for their convenience.
Furthermore, due to unregulated usage of electricity, damage to transformers occurs frequently. As such, it advised consumers to install smart meters to promote judicious usage of electricity, thereby lessening the burden or stress on the power infrastructure and avoiding damage to transformers and wires.
