Dimapur, Jan. 20: A workshop on the topic ‘Importance of choosing the right career’ was held, understood to be on Friday, during the ongoing 67th AKM Conference at Changtongya village in Mokokchung district.
During the event, various speakers discussed careers besides offering motivational inputs for the gathering of students.
‘No matter what, do not ignore education’, said Amba Jamir, executive director of the SDFN, one of the speakers at the session. He said that education was the foundation of success for every individual.
Addressing the students, Jamir said that students’ life should be a stage at which they are to be open to failure: ‘until you try it, you will never realise what is right or wrong.’
Further, he said that skill development was needed to make use of the educational qualifications that the students acquire. College degrees alone will not help one build a career, Jamir said.
Interacting with the students, he challenged them to think and analyze when trying to find fulfilment in the career that one wishes to pursue. ‘Satisfaction will come only when you work for the people and not when you work for yourself,’ he said.
In a world that is a network of skills and people, he implied, one cannot be employed only with certificates and degrees. In support of his contention, the resource person quoted a study: According to an IAM survey, only 7% of Master of Business Administration graduates are found employable while only 20-30% of engineering graduates find jobs equivalent to their degree.
Further, the speaker advised the students to spend more time ‘with elders who have come across failures.’ It will ‘make them stronger.’ The students need to explore life and keep on trying, he said. ‘Do not let anybody control or restrain your education’, said Jamir.
Further, he advised the students to have a vision, identify mentors, identify champions and that they need to be open to learning when pursuing a priority.
Another speaker for the session was Wapangla Imchen, assistant professor, of the department of Management, C-edge College in Dimapur. She gave a discourse on the topic of ‘Personality and Soft Skill Development.’ She spoke about the importance of soft skills and personality development in every individual’s effort toward building a career.
Without soft skills, Imchen told the gathering, one can never find the job or career that one dreams for in life.
In her presentation, Imchen also spoke about the importance of time management, work ethics, and professionalism which she said were strengths that the Naga society still lacks.
Further, she said positive attitude and etiquette are important aspects to one’s personality development. The ‘civilization of the present world’ depend on them, the speaker explained.
The common workshop session was followed by grouped session. The session was divided into three segments: civil services with resource persons Sentilong Ozukum (Inspector of Taxes), Nungshilong (EAC of Tuensang); technical session with resource person Imnameren (executive engineer of Feeder Roads Division, of Tuli); entrepreneurship and media with Watila Longkumer (proprietor of Naro-Ki) and Limalenden Longkumer (president of the Mokokchung Press Club) as resource persons.
