Dimapur, April 12
Alleging apathy of the Development Authority of Nagaland (DAN) in redressing its grievances despite repeated appeals and to demand transferring of the incumbent DAN secretary, Tenants’ Association of Naga Shopping Arcade (TANSA), popularly known as Supermarket, Dimapur, has threatened to down shutters if the concerned authority fails to respond to its demand within 15 days from the publication of this statement.
In a representation to the DAN Chairman, the Association president, Pukhaho Yepthomi, and the secretary, Yarmong, highlighted that tenants as well as shoppers live in constant fear as the Naga Shopping Arcade Complex has become unsafe due to wear and tear from long non-maintenance of the building.
Stating that renovation work was not carried out in the past more than 15 years, the Association pointed out that cracks had developed inside and outside the building resulting in leakage of the roof thereby causing damage to doors and windows which required immediate replacement.
The Association also pointed out to the huge accumulation of wastes and garbage from the weekly market, which were left by the road sides and in the basement area. It said foul smell emitting from such accumulation of wastes are causing health hazards to the residents. It alleged that repeated appeals to construct waste dumping area in the locality were left unheeded to.
Besides, it pointed out that due to lack of proper drainage, stagnant water coupled with rotting garbage in the basement has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes. It also said flooding during monsoon causes huge economic loss to the particularly to the occupants in the basement.
What irked the tenants most was the imposition of 15% service charge besides the monthly rental without undertaking any maintenance work.
Stating that all these problems were discussed with the Secretary, the Association alleged that the latter failed to acknowledge and pay heed to any of their suggestions.
In the light of the above stated circumstances, the Association, in a meeting of its executive members and advisors, resolved to down shutters in the Shopping Arcade, if the concerned authority fails to redress its grievance and transfer the incumbent DAN secretary within 15 days from the date of the publication of this statement.
