District Child Protection Unit (DCPU), Wokha, under the Department of Social Welfare, held a two-day sensitization programme with the village council chairmen, church leaders, student leaders, women leaders and youth leaders on May 28 and 29 at Chukitong and Whozuro block in Wokha district.The resource person and Legal cum Probation Officer, Neinguvotuo Krose, spoke on child rights, the role of Village Level Child Protection Committee (VLCPC) and protection of children from Sexual Offence Act respectively in dealing with the children in conflict with law, missing and found children, orphaned abandoned destitute children, differently-abled children, children from families at risk, affected by conflict and disaster, street children, working children, trafficked children and abused children.
The resource person highlighted that under Street to School Campaign, street children are entitled to get free and compulsory education and Aadhar card. The resource person also highlighted that POCSO Act 2012 is a special law for the protection of children from sexual assault, sexual harassment and pornography.
Resource person pointed out that this Act safeguards the best interest of the child in every judicial process by incorporating child friendly mechanism in reporting, investigation and speedy trial through a designated Special Court.
Also, he stated that the role of the stakeholders like Juvenile Justice Board (JJB), Child Welfare Committee (CWC), Special Juvenile Police Unit (SJPU), Child Care Institution (CCIs) and Village Level Child Protection Committee (VLCPC) in the district were to contribute in the well being of the children in difficult circumstances in exploring the potentials that are hidden in them and provide necessary support service in the lives of these less privilege children as well as bring them back to the social mainstream of life.
In this regard, the resource person made an appeal to the public to report any child related cases to the nearest police station so that the Special Juvenile Police Unit (SJPU) could refer the matter to the JJB or CWC within 24 hours and take necessary corrective/ rehabilitative measure for the children.
