Dimapur, September 29: Deputy Commissioner and chairman of Dimapur District Level Coordination Committee (DLCC), Kesonyu Yhome, has sought concerted effort to make ‘Smoke Free Dimapur Initiatives’ campaign a success.
Addressing the DLCC review meeting for the 2nd quarter 2016-17 in his conference hall on September 26, Kesonyu Yhome said ‘Smoke Free Dimapur Initiatives’ was a small step to ensure that "smoking should not happen where it should not happen."
He felt that qualitative aspects as tobacco free State is more important than quantity without any positive results. While pointing out that declaring tobacco free in institutions was just the beginning with many challenges ahead, he expressed optimism that with the zeal and the willingness manifested by different institutions would help overcome those challenges.
The Deputy Commissioner congratulated the recipients of tobacco free school certificates.
Dr. C Tetso, DNO, NTCP, also said that Smoke Free Dimapur Initiative does not meant that there should not be smokers or tobacco should not be in the market but it was to protect the non smokers.
During discussion, members also suggested different ways and means on how more people can be reached or sensitised about the harmful effects of tobacco in the district. The house also felt the need to display more tobacco warning posters in different places.
Agenda discussed during the meeting included Smoke Free Dimapur Initiatives, sensitisation programme for head of departments and sensitisation programme for village council.
Highlights of the programme also included sharing of experience by Principal of Salesian College, Fr. Policrab; activity report by psychologist ImkumlaAier, and handing over of signature for Smoke Free Dimapur Initiatives.
Tobacco Free School Certificates were awarded to St. Clare HSS, Kacharigaon; Stephered School, Dubagoan; Pine Mount School, Dubagaon; Lima Aier Higher Secondary, Firing Range; High Mountain School; Hope Academy; Holy Child School, Burma Camp; Government High School, Lingrijan; City College of Art & Commerce; Saku Mission Memorial College; Salesian College; and Livingstone Foundation Higher Secondary School.
