DIMAPUR — Deputy Commissioner of Kohima, B Henok Buchem, has ordered the removal of unused and loosely hanging overhead cables and pipes, citing concerns over their impact on the city's aesthetic appeal, electrical and fire safety, and public safety.
The order highlighted the risks posed by these cables and pipes, including increased hazards during natural disasters, obstruction of emergency operations, impediment of heavy vehicle movement, and danger to pedestrians in case of breakage or fall, a DIPR report stated.
All telecommunications companies, internet service providers, cable TV operators, water supply agencies and other concerned entities in Kohima District have been directed to remove all redundant, abandoned and unused overhead cables and pipes within seven days (with effect from November 21).

“And also bundle, sleeve and securely fasten all active overhead cables and pipes as per approved technical standards within the same period.
“Non-complaint cables/pipes shall be removed by competent authority without further notice, at the expense of the defaulting entity,” the order stated.
Curb on construction pollution
In a separate order, the deputy commissioner stated that dust and debris from uncovered building construction sites pollute the air, thereby degrading its quality.
“Also uncovered building construction activities generate excessive noise, contributing to noise pollution; and pose safety risks, as falling parts, tools, equipment, machinery, or structural collapses may endanger human life and property,” it stated.
The DC also directed that all building construction firms, agencies, and individuals in Kohima district should cover construction sites with perimeter hoarding, debris netting, scaffold shrink-wrap, Monarflex sheeting, or equivalent measures, in the interest of public health, safety, and environmental protection.
“Any destruction, defacement of public property, harm to human life or livestock caused by such negligence, shall attract strict penalties under relevant provision of law,” it added.
