DIMAPUR— Reigning Nagaland wrestling champion Venuzo Timothy Dawhuo arrived home on Thursday after defeating Chin champ Mang C Lian by two straight bouts in a challenger card match during the 12th Chin Youth Organisation of North America (CYONA) biennial convention at Bloomington, Indianapolis, USA, on July 3.
The champion was received by Thenyizu village representatives along with Chakhesang Wrestling Association (CWA), friends and well-wishers at Dimpaur Airport.
During an interaction with the media, CWA president and coach, Vekhozo Akhozo revealed that apart from wrestling, the 12th CYONA biennial convention featured a wide range of multi-disciplinary competitions.
Akhozo said the CYONA extended a special invitation to Dawhuo to take part in the convention, with the aim to celebrate cultural exchange through the art of wrestling.
The coach informed that Naga wrestling style and Chin wrestling style share striking similarities, with only a few technical differences, and that the Naga wrestler did not encounter any significant challenges in adapting to the Chin wrestling format.
[bsa_pro_ad_space id=1]He also said the championship belt was designed to represent both Naga and Chin cultural identities, as the “Naga national flag” and “Chin national flag” were prominently displayed on both ends of the belt.
While sharing a brief report of the event, Akhozo mentioned that the team landed in USA on June 29 and the tournament took place on July 3.
He expressed gratitude to Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio for his unwavering encouragement and financial support. He also thanked General Secretary of the Nagaland Olympic Association, Abu Metha, Power & Parliamentary Affairs Minister, KG Kenye, and Advisor of CAWD and Taxes, Kudecho Khamo, for all their support.
Dawhuo said that he could not have achieved his current position without the blessings of God, the unwavering support from his family and friends.
He conveyed a message to the youngsters, urging them to keep God at the forefront of their endeavours to find success in their chosen paths.
Further, the champion shared that he has been invited by CYONA again for a tournament scheduled in the month of October. He expressed his desire to participate in the competition if circumstances permit.
