Dimapur, May 12 (EMN): Students got insight of their enormous responsibilities to fight economy disparity, political instability, social exclusiveness, social deprivation and cultural degradation in this present global world confronting them.
Observing the 22nd general conference of the Zeliangrong Students’ Union Nagaland (ZSUN) on May 12 at St. Xavier College Hall, Jalukie town, on the theme ‘Confronting our realities,’ speakers urged upon the students to accept the past. Stating that everyone is involved in the process history, speakers said without accepting the past all attempts to confront realities will be unattainable.
Addressing the huge gathering of students, chief guest and Parliamentary Secretary of Youth Resources & Sports, Khekaho Assumi, stressed that a student can only achieve success in life through “sheer hard work.”
“If you students are the future, then you have to work today...you have to burn the midnight oil. That should be your first priority in life as students,” the Parliamentary Secretary said.
Stating that knowledge is the most powerful weapon in the world at the present context, Khekaho said knowledge can come only through education. Stating that a school or teacher can only guide or teach students, he however, said the onus to acquire quality knowledge lies with the students.
Sharing his own testimony, Khekaho admitted that he was not an ideal student in his school or college days, but that he learnt three valuable attributes which helped him in his later life as a businessman and politician. The three qualities according to the parliamentary secretary are humility, honesty and magnanimity.
“If you posses these three qualities, then it can take you places and positions”, he said.
The parliamentary secretary also stressed on changing one’s mindset along with the times. “You may not change but time changes and you have to move along with the times”, he added.
Khekaho further called upon the Zeliangrong community, especially the students and youth, to remain united for progress and growth of the community as a whole.
President ZSUN, Amonbo Zeliang, in his presidential address shared some of the activities and achievements of the union in the present tenure. Solidarity speeches were also delivered by president of Zeliangrong Mepui (Women) Organization Nagaland, Apeuna Iheilung; president of All Zeliangrong Students’ Union Nchachieng Kompoing; and vice president of Kuki Students’ Organisation (KSO).
Convenor of organising committee, K Elu Ndang, delivered the welcome address.
