DIMAPUR, JULY 22
Hurt by the imposition of Disturbed Area Act in the whole of Nagaland the Naga Hoho today apprised the Prime Minister to reconsider such move reminding that it brings the ghosts of yesteryears, where ‘Nagas have suffered enough atrocities under the Indian Armed forces and where the memories of hurts and humiliation still runs strong in public and individual memories.’
In a representation to the Prime Minister today, the Naga Hoho ‘representing the Naga peoples at large’ said that the re-imposition of the Act was ‘unprecedented and unexpected of your government’.
“The Naga populations have perpetually lived under a siege of war since post-Independent India till today,” it stated while adding, “Given the huge mandate given to your government, and the commitments given to the current peace talks, the Nagas are eagerly expecting political solution and peace under your leadership, once and for all”. The Naga Hoho representation also mentioned that the imposition of Disturbed Area Act is inimical to freedom of individuals, ‘since the instruments are for warlike situations, and has been received as a huge disappointment by all walks of life in the Naga community.’
“We also take this opportunity to highlight that the ongoing Indo-Naga talks should not be derailed at any cost. Stray incidents should not put to threat the confidence measures that have been invested so far. The blanket imposition of Disturbed Area Act for the whole state of Nagaland, notwithstanding the recent acts or omissions, has deeply hurt the sentiments of the common and general desires of the Nagas!” it added.
The Naga Hoho then told the Prime Minister to build public-confidence by removing existing and military and extra-judicial laws like Armed Forces (Special) Powers Act, 1958; ‘so as to support and pro-actively negotiate a peaceful solution for the ongoing Indo-Naga political talk.’
