Imphal, April 8
Janata Dal United has demanded white paper from the Congress-led State government and BJP government at the Centre on the three major issues of Manipur. The issues are AFSPA, the ogoing Indo-Naga peace talks and the territorial integrity of Manipur.
This was said by the leaders of state JD (U) in a press meet held today at the party office at Babupara, Imphal.
Speaking to media persons, state JD (U) president M Tombi strongly condemned the recent rejection of the Jeevan Reddy Committee report on AFSPA.
He added that BJP, in its manifesto at the previous 16th Lok Sabha Election, had promised removal of AFSPA from Manipur and to save the life of human rights crusader Irom Chanu Sharmila. However, the BJP government had betrayed the people of the land and its own manifesto by rejecting the committee report, said the JDU leader. He further blamed BJP of being irresponsible with its statements and gave example of the recent ‘immigrant’ term used by BJP on the people of North Eastern region.
He also mentioned about the 2001 June Uprising where 18 Manipuri lives were lost, all because BJP used ‘without territorial limits’ phrase in the Indo-Naga Peace Talk.
M Tombi also lambasted the 'poor governance' of the Congress-led Manipur government. He said that there is no rule of land in the state and the law and order situation is at its worst.
He said that there is not a single government office which can function without the help of police. He also demanded reorganisation in the police department as the present security system is all flawed.
JD (U) general secretary Lian Gangte strongly condemned the humiliation gave by the 8th Assam Rifles to a cadre of ZUF and also the women of the state at Tamenglong town.
Terming the act as a gross violation of ‘international human rights’, Lian further said that such unfortunate incidents keep happening in the state in the veil of AFSPA.
He also added that the ZUF cadre must be punished as per law, but should not be humiliated like that and disrespectful shouting to the womenfolk is highly condemnable.
JD (U) leaders present at the press meet demanded the NDA government that white papers on major issues such as AFSPA, Peace Talk and territorial integrity must be produced soon.
The leaders also demanded real development and action for the state and added that mere visits of Union Ministers and only bringing out the faults will not do any good.
