KOHIMA, MAY 9 : The Chakhesang Youth Front (CYF), reaffirming and enforcing the resolution of its apex tribal body- the Chakhesang Public Organization (CPO) on bio-diversity conservation within the Chakhesang inhabited areas of Phek district, recently conducted an unannounced checking on hunting, import of pig/pork from outside the district, and indiscriminate burning of jungle.
The youth organization in collaboration with unit village youth leaders, during the surprise checking caught eight violators including Kuveku Hoshi and Khoku Venuh of Phek village, Kewe Akami from Chizami town, Amvü Deinu, Neipekhalo Deinu and Neiwepre Mero from Pfütseromi village, Lhikote Venuh and Neiwetsho Keyho from Mesulumi village for trapping and hunting.
The CYF also caught five violators of import of pig/pork. They are Vekhohu Puro from Pfütsero town (Chikri Nasa), Nieduyi Huire and Kuzhochiyi from Phek village, Vetahu Chizo and Lhutazü from Phek town.
This is in connection with the CPO resolution to prohibit all import of pigs for slaughter within Chakhesang jurisdiction with effect from January 2000, with the objective to encourage local meat production, prevent cash drain and epidemic diseases of pigs.
Further, the CYF, in a release issued by its president, Welete Kapfo stated that 19 villages had violated the CPO’s resolution on indiscriminate burning of jungles this year. The defaulting villages include Thevopisü, Ketsapo, Phusachodu, Khezhakeno, Mesulumi, Phek village, Lozaphuhu, Losami, Sümi, Pfütseromi, Dzülha, Thenyizu, Kikruma, Chizami, Zhavame, Leshemi, Thetsümi, Thipuzu and Rünguzu Nagwü.
Meanwhile, the CYF has appealed to all to extend their support towards the biodiversity conservation efforts and work collectively to protect and conserve environment. The second phase of checking will be initiated soon, the release stated.
