Dimapur, April 15 (EMN): In an unfortunate incident, a sudden cyclonic storm that hit Nagaland on Wednesday killed one person at Longkei village in Mon district.
The deceased has been identified as Shahpong Konyak.
According to a person from Longkei village, the victim who was around 45-40 years old and a village guard (VG) personnel returned home from the fields on Wednesday evening when a tree fell on his house, killing him on the spot.
Heavy cyclonic storm accompanied by thunderstorms lashed several states in Northeast, including Nagaland on Wednesday evening, uprooting trees and disrupting power supply. Some locations in Nagaland experienced hailstone and heavy rains too.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), north-eastern states will experience heavy rainfall till April 18. Due to the convergence of strong moist winds from the Bay of Bengal, Northeast India is likely to experience fairly widespread to widespread rainfall with isolated heavy falls from April 15 for the subsequent 4-5 days. Thunder squalls and hailstorms are also very likely over these regions on April 15 and the 16th, the department updated.
The department also forecast that thunderstorms accompanied by gusty wind at 40-50 kmph was very likely at isolated places over Mon, Tuensang, Kohima, Kiphire, Peren, and Dimapur districts on April 16. It went on to say that on April 17, districts like Mon, Tuensang, Longleng, Kohima, Kiphire, Peren and Dimapur may experience thunderstorm accompanied by gusty wind at 40-50 kmph.
It also predicted that on April 18, thunderstorm is expected at isolated places over Kohima and Dimapur, while thunderstorms accompanied by gusty wind were likely in Mon, Tuensang,Kohima, Kiphire, Peren and Dimapur.
The IMD has issued ‘yellow’ warning Nagaland, which means the state has to 'watch out and be updated'.
