KOHIMA — Despite Cyclone Remal causing significant damage and claiming lives in West Bengal and Bangladesh after making landfall on Sunday evening, no casualties have been reported among Nagas residing in Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal, according to the Naga Students' Union Kolkata(NSUK).
On Tuesday, NSUK president Kevinguzo Medoze informed Eastern Mirror that their sources confirmed the safety of Naga residents in Kolkata. He said that the cyclone brought harsh winds and heavy rains to the city, but the level of destruction was significantly lower in urban areas compared to rural parts of West Bengal.
The damage in Kolkata was minimal, with no dangerous incidents reported within the city limits, he maintained.
Naga residents, along with other Kolkata citizens, took precautionary measures such as staying indoors during the cyclone's peak. “This proactive approach helped minimize potential harm and ensured their safety”, Medoze said.
Numerous Nagas living in Kolkata, including those travelling, took to Facebook to mark themselves safe during the cyclone.
A Naga resident of New Town, Kolkata, informed this newspaper that they only experienced moderate rainfall and light winds in their area since the cyclone hit on Sunday night. They were able to go out for groceries after the rain stopped and reported only slight fogginess in their locality on Tuesday.
