CSU warns railway contractors against illegal waste dumping, urging strict environmental compliance and threatening action over continued violations in Chakhroma.
DIMAPUR — The Chakhroma Students' Union (CSU) has warned contractors and executing agencies involved in railway construction within its jurisdiction against illegal disposal of construction debris and hazardous waste.
In a press release issued on Friday, the union expressed concern over the indiscriminate dumping of construction debris, chemical waste, oil and fuel residues into streams, rivers, water bodies, roadsides and other public areas in Chakhroma region.
The CSU directed all contractors, companies and executing agencies to immediately stop such practices and strictly adhere to environmental laws, safety protocols and waste management guidelines issued by the competent authorities.
It stated that construction waste and hazardous materials must not be discharged into streams or dumped indiscriminately, warning that such actions degrade the environment, contaminate water sources, endanger public health and threaten the livelihoods of local communities.
The union stressed that all waste generated during construction activities must be collected, transported and disposed of only at designated and approved sites in accordance with applicable environmental laws and standards.

While reiterating its support for the ongoing railway infrastructure project, the CSU acknowledged its importance in improving connectivity, creating economic opportunities and contributing to the long-term development of Nagaland.
However, it maintained that development must be carried out responsibly and sustainably, with strict compliance to environmental safeguards and waste management regulations to protect the interests of local communities and preserve the ecological integrity of the area.
Warning of consequences for non-compliance, the union stated that it would take up the matter with the relevant government departments and other authorities if illegal dumping continues, and would support appropriate legal and administrative action against those responsible.
