A delegation of Thai government consisting of Minister Counsellor (Commercial) Tharadol Thongruang and other officials from the department of Business Development, Ministry of Commerce and about 15 Thai businessmen from logistics sector paid a courtesy call on Minister for R&B Kuzholuzo Nienu and officials of PWD (R&B) on Wednesday to discuss issues of potential trade, logistics and connectivity in the region.During a two-hour meeting between the two parties at Hotel Vivor, Kohima this afternoon, the minister proposed, besides others, a potential Cross Border Road connecting Nagaland, Myanmar and Thailand. The proposed road will stretch 361 kilometres (approximately) starting from Dimapur-Kohima-Phek-Avangkhu (International Trade Centre)-Leyshi (Myanmar) then onward to Bangkok (Thailand) via Mandalay and Chiangmai. It was discussed that the construction of this Cross Border Road will further enhance the Look East Policy of the government of India and it will connect the north eastern states with the east Asian countries, providing ample opportunity for opening up business relationship and bring people of the regions closer.
The Thai government delegates expressed their interest in the proposed road and assured to do a survey and send a follow up report later this year.
The team is doing an ASEAN trade lane surveying via India and Myanmar, with an objective to establish links and opportunity to do business in the region, surveying the potentials of logistic connection, creating business relation and network with local businessmen and studying systems of logistics and goods transportation especially between India and Thailand.
Earlier, the team reportedly visited Kolkata and Guwahati and after the meeting in Kohima, the team left for Manipur, from where they will proceed to Myanmar and onward to Bangkok.
