KOHIMA, JULY 6: The three-day training program on phonetics for government teachers, in Kohima town, has concluded. The training was organized by the department of School Education, in collaboration with United Kingdom-based Jolly Phonics.
Over 50 government primary school teachers from Kohima and Dimapur were privileged to attend the three-day workshop, which was conducted in the Zonal Council Hall, in Kohima town.
Trainer Shainaz Jussa, principal and managing director of Phonickids in Mumbai (Jolly Phonics UK), was the resource person for the event.
According to the trainer, the training had been ‘very timely.’ Jussa expressed hope that the teachers would be able to disseminate ‘the right knowledge to the students from an early age.’
Through phonetics, Shainaz said, an educational system can improve considerably. Besides, of course, phonics can make learning fun for students, she said. The trainer also observed that the educational system in the state was ‘going to get better as there is support from the government.’
The chief guest for the closing function, additional secretary to the government of Nagaland, Kevishe, said in his address to ‘improve the education system in the state.’
“The state’s School Education department, over the years, had been on the move to revive the education system in the state. This is the right time for the education system to move forward,” he claimed. The official also said that the government was ‘ever ready to invest more towards the improvement of the education sector.’
The additional secretary also announced that Jolly Phonics, based in UK, will now be providing free textbooks and reading materials to government schools in Nagalad.
Facts about Phonics
What is the difference between phonics and phonemic awareness?
Phonics involves the relationship between sounds and written symbols, whereas phonemic awareness involves sounds in spoken words. Therefore, phonics instruction focuses on teaching sound-spelling relationships and is associated with print. Most phonemic awareness tasks are oral.
What is phonics instruction?
The primary focus of phonics instruction is to help beginning readers understand how letters are linked to sounds (phonemes) to form letter-sound correspondences and spelling patterns and to help them learn how to apply this knowledge in their reading.
What are the phonics skills?
Phonics is a method for teaching reading and writing of the English language by developing learners’ phonemic awareness—the ability to hear, identify, and manipulate phonemes—in order to teach the correspondence between these sounds and the spelling patterns (graphemes) that represent them.
