
Dimapur — A three-day short-term training programme on ‘Vetero-legal and ethno-veterinary practice in veterinary medicine” was held at College of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry (CoVSAH) in Jalukie town under Peren district from March 22 to the 24th.
Organised by the departments of Veterinary Medicine, the training programme was conducted as part of the feedback and suggestions from the veterinary officers of department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services, government of Nagaland, stated an update from CoVSAH.
Altogether, 11 veterinary officers from different districts of Nagaland have participated in the training programme.
During the training, the dean of College of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry, Dr. I Shakuntala, has emphasised that such training programmes are the need of the hour. She stated that alternative and traditional medicines are getting more attention in recent years due to growing concerns of antimicrobial resistance and side effects of other allopathic medicine.
The dean also mentioned that the tribal people and ethnic races throughout the globe have developed extensive knowledge of medicinal plants for treating illness.
Dr. Gunjan Das, professor and head of Veterinary Medicine and course director, in his address, mentioned that Ethno-veterinary medicine plays a greater role in ameliorating animal diseases and is sometimes a better option for farmers to treat their sick animals as it provides efficient and cheap therapies along with their common accessibility. He also expressed hope that the training programme would enhance knowledge of veterinary officers on ethno-veterinary medicine and its application in their field practices.
An invited lecture on the vetero-legal aspect of veterinary medicine practice was also delivered by Italang Ramlai, an advocate from Dimapur.
Dr. Fr. Vilasal Godfrey Thappo, Global Holistic Health Centre, Research and Training Institute, Jalukie, was also one of the invited resource persons.
