Dimapur, August 4 : A couple, husband and wife, are said to have been assaulted by persons from a particular community that organizations said on Thursday was a tribally motivated attack. Various organizations including the Zeliang People Organization (ZPO-Nagaland) issued statements denouncing the alleged attack.
According to the Zeliang People Organization, the incident reportedly happened on August 3 at around 4 PM. Some youths from a particular community are said to have stopped the couple who were traveling in a Tata Sumo on their way to Jalukie from Dimapur. They were carrying the principal and staffers of Novodaya Kendriya Vidyalaya School in Jalukie, the ZPO stated.
They were stopped at ‘Pimla junction,’ the organization stated. The perpetrators searched for occupants belonging to a particular tribe abusing them (tribe) “as the most hated tribe,” the ZPO stated.
Finding no person from the targeted tribe, the perpetrators turned on the only Naga in the vehicle, the driver of the Sumo, a Mao.
He was ‘punched with a stone in the face who bleeded (sic) profusely in the spot,’ the note explained.
‘In the meantime, his wife, Mrs. Komurha, who happened to be a staffer and serving as UDC of the school, was also an occupant of the vehicle. She came to the rescue of her husband, shouting why he was being beaten. The perpetrators did not stop there but even punched the lady with the stone in her mouth, who also bleeded (sic),” the ZPO explained.
The organization has condemned the alleged crime calling it “an act of insainity (sic).”
The organization has urged the “concerned tribal hoho” under whose jurisdiction Pimla village was, to “come out with clarification whether this is the handiwork of some individual or is it a tribal issue.”
The ZPO warned: ‘If it was an individual issue than the concerned Hoho is urged to immediately intervene and book the culprits to prevent further escalation of the situation. The authorities in concern is requested to book the culprits at the earliest and award stringent punishment against them before any issues crops up between the two tribal. Inaction from the authority may invite the wrath of the public and situation turning ugly; the public should not be held responsible.’
The “Mao Women Jalukie Unit” also issued a similar note denouncing the alleged incident calling it “an assault equivalent to murder…”
The Mao Union of Jalukie also denounced the “wilful (sic) attempt to murder our members…without any provocation.”
The accused was named by the union as a member of Pimla village
‘This communal hatred to destroy or maim the life of innocent public should be vehemently condemned by every right thinking Naga brethren,’ the note added.
