CoTU suspends the Kangpokpi shutdown for seven days, giving the Manipur government time to address its demands.
IMPHAL — The Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU), based in Kangpokpi, has temporarily suspended the total shutdown in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district for seven days, giving the government time to address its charter of demands in connection with the killing of two persons from Taphou Kuki village.
CoTU said the temporary suspension was intended to give the government an opportunity to take “concrete and decisive steps” towards addressing the demands raised by the committee.
The committee warned that failure by the government to arrive at acceptable solutions within the stipulated seven-day period would prompt it to revoke the suspension and resume the total shutdown with intensified measures.
The shutdown, initially called for 48 hours, was extended from 5 pm on November 2 and further continued until 5 pm on November 6, citing the government’s alleged failure to take decisive and concrete action towards fulfilling the charter of demands.
The agitation was called in connection with the killing of two persons from Taphou Kuki village, identified as Paoginlal Hangshing, 21, and Tinginlun Chongloi, 20.
The two went missing on October 28 from a location near 9MR, between Hengbung and Taphou Kuki village. They were recovered by a joint team of security forces from a location along the Senapati-Phaibung (SP) road on November 1 following continuous multiple search operations.
