Kohima, Feb. 7: Chief minister TR Zeliang on Tuesday said the Myanmar government has suspended the construction of fencing in the international border between Myanmar and India in Pangsha area.
Zeliang told reporters here today that the National Security Advisor, Ajit Doval had called him on February 6 to convey that the matter pertaining to construction of border fencing in Pangsha area by the Myanmar government and the opposition to the same by the Naga people on both sides of the border was taken up by the ministry of External Affairs with the Myanmar government.
“I was told that the Myanmar government has stopped the construction works. Detailed discussion between the two countries will be held later and final decision will be taken,” Zeliang said.
Zeliang had earlier written to both the prime minister and the union home minister Rajnath Singh that there was no need for border fencing in the area because on both sides of the boundary, people from the same community lived, such as the Konyak, Khiamniungan and Pochury etc.
He also said the NSA to the prime minister had told him that Modi would like to discuss the matter when he (Zeliang) visits New Delhi next. The chief minister also said the state government is convening a ‘Naga Summit’ involving all the organisations representing the Naga people living in India and Myanmar to come together and discuss and share their opinions on the issue on February 25 in Kohima.
